CCD - Pen - Barcode Reader and Laser Scanner
Which Bar Code Reader Should You
Choose..?
|
Pen Readers
Handy due to very small size. Can be stored in a
laptop bag very easily. Some keyboard operators like these because
they can hold them and type at the same time!
Often used in hospital labs
and where you have to scan small codes in a 'menu' of bar codes.

CCD Readers
No moving parts and very reliable. Needs to virtually
touch the code to scan and has a limited width - i.e. the width of the
read head - 65 to 90mm. No additional software required on PC.
Available with PS2 keyboard wedge, RS232 (serial) USB and varieties of
terminals. Connects to Mac or PC with USB
Used in stores where the
throughput is not very great - bookshops and libraries |

|
Linear Imagers
One of the more recent developments in bar code
scanning technology. Can scan up to 14" away like a laser and has a
super fast decode - scans up to 270/sec! Will scan in full sunlight.
Connects via PS2, RS232, USB, terminals, thin clients
etc. No moving parts - the better ones are guaranteed for up to 5
years!
Many in use in Hospital
medical records departments and other document handling
departments Also being used in industrial applications where their
durability is valued. |
 |
|
|
Laser Scanners
Offers the longest range scan of all the
technologies. Far fewer moving parts than in older type lasers and
some now come with a 5 year warranty! Scan from near contact to over a
metre with certain models
Used in general retail and
industrial applications (heavy duty models) |
 |
|
|
Presentation Scanners
Where a large number of bar code scans are performed,
the presentation scanner, which emits laser scan lines which intersect
at all angles, decodes the barcode whichever angle it is presented
from
Good in high volume document
handling environments and for large quantities
of retail scans |
 |
|
|
2D Scanners - Area Imagers
Obviously essential if you're wanting to scan 2
dimensional codes! Will also scan linear codes from any angle -
instantly
Being used increasingly in
industrial applications where manufacturers are now using the 2D code
on small components!
Will avoid RSI in operators
due to there being no requirement to twist your wrist to scan the
code! |
