It uses standard I.P. networks, such as LANs or the Internet, for transporting information, rather than dedicated point to point cabling, such as used in analogue video systems. The images can be viewed and administered using any web enabled PC, either locally or remotely. Digital images are recorded on hard drives, which can be stored locally or transferred off site for added security; there is no degradation of image quality due to storage, most cameras have built in motion detection and audio capability. External cameras are designed to function in extremes of temperature and humidity; they are equipped with day/night functionality which enables them to automatically record in very low light situations.
