SCANNING IMEI BARCODE NUMBERS ON MOBILE PHONES

If you're a retailer or repairer of mobile phones, you will need to be able to scan the bar code which encodes the IMEI number on every cellular phone.

These codes are displayed inside each phone, generally under the battery and on the end of the carton of a new phone.

If you already scan barcodes at point of sale, you can doubtless utilise your existing bar code reader or scanner to read these codes into your chosen application, such as a spreadsheet or a customer document.

If you are new to bar code reading, the most cost effective entry level is the CCD Bar Code Reader, which plugs into your PC along with the keyboard ('keyboard wedge')

Whilst these readers are inexpensive - starting at around £55.00 - they emit a fairly thick line of red light which, on some tiny phones, may not be appropriate, due to the fact that the barcodes are very short in height and they need a thinner line - such as a laser, to scan them properly. In this case a Laser Bar Code Scanner would be ideal. Laser Presentation scanners such as are featured on this page, are not suitable for these small bar codes because it's very difficult to:-

a) Scan the code in the first place

b) Know which code you've scanned when you get a scan!

NOKIA have just started to put 2D Datamatrix codes on their new mobile phones. These codes contain the 15 digit IMEI number and the 7 digit model number separated by a semi-colon in a 2D code, which is slightly less than 5mm square. To scan these special 2D barcodes you will need a different type of barcode scanner - the Datalogic Lynx D302e is ideal for this purpose - see our section on 2D Bar Code Readers   NB. these readers can scan normal linear codes as well as 2D

What is an IMEI number?

Short for International Mobile Equipment Identity, a unique number given to every single mobile phone, typically found behind the battery.

IMEI numbers of cellular phones connected to a GSM network are stored in a database (EIR - Equipment Identity Register) containing all valid mobile phone equipment.

When a phone is reported stolen or is not type approved, the number is marked invalid.

The number consists of four groups that looks this:

nnnnnn--nn-nnnnnn-n

The first set of numbers is the type approval code (TAC). The first two digits represent the country code. The rest make up the final assembly code. The second group of numbers identifies the manufacturer:

01 and 02 = AEG

07 and 40 = Motorola

10 and 20 = Nokia

41and 44 = Siemens

51= Sony, Siemens, Ericsson

The third set is the serial number and the last single digit is an additional number (usually 0).

The GSM Association (GSMA) has accepted the role of the Global Decimal Administrator (GDA) as recommended by the Joint Experts Meeting on IMEI / MEID, to allocate International Mobile Equipment Identity Numbers (IMEI) to manufacturers for use in GSM , UMTS and multi-mode mobile stations (MS) including these technologies. The ownership and management of the IMEI structure is understood to be invested in the GSM and UMTS industry as a whole and not the province of any one sector. The GSMA has appointed an Agent to carry out the function of IMEI allocations on behalf of the industry. Initially the Agent is BABT based in the United Kingdom. The allocation procedure is funded by the GSM Association at no charge to manufacturers and this requirement shall form part of any appointment of an Agent by the GSMA.
